Diesmal, verehrter Freund, nahe ich mich Ihnen mit einer besondere Bitte. Würden Sie so freundlich sein, mir bald eine nur annähernde Berechnung zu liefern, wie viele Arten Mammalia, Aves, Pisces, Insecta, Polyzoa &c &c man wohl annehmen darf als existirend in der lebenden Schöpfung. Berechnung der Genera wurde zu weit führen u zu umständlich sein. Ich möchte nur ohne viel Bemühen Ihrerseits wissen, was Ihre allgemeine Ansichten über diese Zahlen Verhältnisse sind, ohne besondere Berechnung. Mein Zweck hierbei ist, diese Notizen für meine Eröffnungs Rede der Austral. Assoc. for the Advancement of Science zu verwerthen, damit als original bei dieser Gelegenheit diese Proportionen annähernd angegeben werden könnten. Ich würde den Namen jedes Zoologen angeben, der bei dieser Gelegenheit die Berechnung seiner Classe liefert.

This time, respected Friend, I approach you with a particular request. Would you be so kind as to supply me soon with only an approximate calculation of how many species of Mammalia, Aves, Pisces, Insecta, Polyzoa &c &c one may probably accept as existing in the living creation. Calculation of genera would lead too far and be too laborious. I would like to know just without much trouble on your part, what your general views are about these numerical proportions, without particular calculation. My object here is to utilize these notes for my opening address to the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science, so that these proportions could be cited approximately as original on this occasion.

See B90.13.01, p. 14: 'The described species of living animals, according to a very recent calculation by Drs Krauss and Lamprecht, largely from the works of Leunis and Bronn, reach in number one quarter of a million! Of these are Mammals 2,300, Birds 11,200, Fishes 9,000, Molluscs 2,300, Insects 167,000 (with 80,000 Beetles).'

I would give the names of every zoologist who produces the calculation of his class on this occasion.
