Sie werden mich gewiss als abtrünnig betrachten, mein edler Freund, da ich mich seit vielen Monaten Ihnen nicht schriftlich nahete, obwohl ich ein gelegentliches Lebens Zeichen von mir gab durch die successive wenn auch nur geringe Zusendung von Sämereien

Sie wissen aber, dass wir eine Welt Austellung hatten zur Feier des hundertjährigen Bestehens Australiens als eines Colonial-Landes[.] Dies gab viel Extra-Arbeit mir in dem professionellen Departement u als ein Comissair. Dann kam der medicinische Congress, an dem sich mehrere hundert australische Ärzte betheiligten, u in dem ich als Präsident der therapeutischen Section zu wirken hatte; dann drängten die Geschäfte für die Pariser "Exhibition", u ich hatte durch viele Monate auch die schwere Neben Arbeit für die 7te erweiterte Ausgabe der "Select plants" und für den dichotomischen Theil des "Key to the system of Vict. plants", das letztere ein besonders schwieriges Werk. Nun bin ich auch zum Präsidenten für die Melb. Versamml. "Austral. Associat for the Advancement of Science" gewählt, welche im Jan 1890 zusammen kommen wird nach dem Vorbild der Brit Association, welche wieder aus dem Beispiel, welches Oken gab durch die Versamml. deutsch. Naturforscher u Ärzte hervorging. Als actives Mitglied solchen nahm ich in Kiel 1846 Theil!

Wenn Sie also auch in den nächsten Monaten nicht viel von mir hören, so schreiben Sie es nicht einem Mangel an Aufmerksamkeit Ihnen gegenüber zu. Der Tag hat ja doch nur jedesmal 24 Stunden.

Dem Atlas der Acacien folgt nun in 1889 ein Band von Salsolaceen, damit die werthvollen Species (vide "Select plants") leicht erkannt werden mögen für methodische Aussaat an unsern Salztriften. Manche der austr. Arten möchten in milden Strichen auch noch Russland zu gut kommen[.] Was sind denn bei Ihnen die besten Salzbüsche für Schaafe am Baical &c

Nun noch eine besondere Bitte , welche ich an Sie u Ihren berühmten Sohn gemeinsam richte. In 1891 findet die nächste Versammlung des Austral Medical Congress statt u zwar in Sydney. Würde Hr Dr Regel bei den Professoren der med. Facultät in Petersburg u vielleicht auch bei Collegen an anderen Russ. Universitäten erfragen, ob wir hier hoffen dürften, dass Delegaten hierher kommen würden, wenn das Sydney-Committee eine directe Einladung sendete auch an alle russ. Universitäten. Es wäre dann freilich nöthig, dass zur Zeit für ein Semester ein locum tenens gewählt würde

You will probably look on me as a deserter, my noble friend, as I have not approached you in writing for many months, even though I gave an occasional sign of life in the form of successive even if only small consignments of seeds.

But you know that we had an International Exhibition

The Centennial International Exhibition opened in Melbourne on 1 August 1888.

to celebrate the Centenary of Australia as a colony. This meant much extra work for me in the professional Department and as one of the Commissioners. Then followed the Medical Congress, in which several hundred Australian doctors participated

and in which I had to officiate as president of the therapeutical section. After that work for the Paris "Exhibition" was pressing,

and in addition I had a great deal of extra work for the 7th enlarged edition of the "Select plants",

the latter a particularly difficult task. As well, I have now been elected President for the Melbourne meeting of the "Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science" that will gather in January 1890, modelled on the British Association which in turn sprang from the example set by Oken with the meeting of German naturalists and doctors. I took part in that in Kiel in 1846 as an active member!

So, if you do not hear much from me in the next few months either, please do not interpret it as a lack of consideration towards you. After all, each day has only 24 hours.

Now still a special request , directed to both you and your famous son. The next meeting of the Australian Medical Congress is to take place in Sydney in 1891. Would Dr Regel ask around amongst the professors of the medical faculty in St Petersburg and perhaps also amongst colleagues at other Russian universities whether we might hope to see delegates coming here if the Sydney committee were to send an invitation directly to all the Russian universities. It would then be necessary, of course, to elect a locum tenens for one semester.
