Letter not found. The text given here is from ‘A new Rafflesia’, Gardeners’ chronicle, 4 May 1889, p. 562. The article opens by quoting, unacknowledged, a report in the Argus, 5 March 1889, p. 7, concerning the discovery in Mindanao, the Philippines, of ‘a specimen in full bloom, a five-petalled flower, nearly a yard in diameter — as large as a carriage-wheel, in fact.’ The quotation from M's letter is introduced by ' Baron von Mueller , in com municating to us this intelligence, says'.
The letter is dated to March as the latest date that it could have been sent to have been reported in this issue. It is likely that M sent a cutting from the Argus, soon after it was published; he may not have included the name of the source newspaper.
Evidently a Rafflesia allied to R. Arnoldi. Only the much smaller R. Cumingi
