The text given here is based on the minutes of a meeting of the Council of the Victorian Branch of the Royal Geogaphical Society of Australasia held on 28 June 1889, where it is reported that M's letter as President to MacGregor, informing him of the Council's resolution, was read; see Transactions and proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia (Vic. Branch), vol. 7, part 1 (1889), p. 14. M's letter is dated to March 1889 on the assumption that he would have written it soon after the Council meeting on 1 March at which the subsidy was agreed.
