Dear Baron
I send you one more sample of an Eucalypt which grows in several parts of the mountains and which with hesitation I have assigned to E. Gunnii.
2
The specimen is almost certainly MEL 1609110, now identified as Eucalyptus cypellocarpa.
It grows at Glen Falloch, Macallister River

in Upper Devonian Shales at 1500ft; at Dargo on plutonic intrusive rocks and contact schists at from 700 to 1200 ft, and at Fainting Range Tambo River in mica schists at about 1200 ft. Probably it grows in other similar localities. It is a rather small tree — under 30 ft with often a short and gnarled bole and straggling branches. The bark is distinctly Rhytiphloious

See B58.11.01, p. 99, where M classified Eucalyptus species by the characteristics of their bark; Rhytiphloiae were those with rough and fissured bark on all parts of the tree.
on the bole and lower limbs but smooth on the branches. The small saplings and adventitious shoots have opposed almost sessile ovate leaves. I have not seen it yet in bloom. The sample I send you is from the Dargo.
The observation which I made for you as to the elevation to which I found that reaches at Walhalla must be corrected. I made further careful observations when there last week — the height is not less than 1400 ft above sea level.
I am dear Baron
yours faithfully
A. W. Howitt
