None of the specimens named are now at MEL and so the date of the letter cannot be inferred from collection dates. Specimens numbered 7-30 are listed in M to W. Gill, 14 December 1888, while specimens 35-38 are listed in M to W. Gill, 20 August 1889. M's lists broadly follow the sequence of Gill's collection numbers, and the Item is dated to 1889 on the presumption that it preceded the August 1889 list; it is not possible, however, to infer the likely month.

There will be no difficulty, dear Mr Gill, to realize your wish, that a new plant should be named after you, because among minute weeds , which come up in early spring many absolute novelties must yet occur there. But all your plants for such purposes, should be collected as well in fruit as in flower.
