This glorious event in my career, dear Prof McCoy, is still further enhanced by the
generous sentiments, expressed by so many friends, among whom I value the facilitation
of a leader in science, as yourself, most highly. Let us regard this grand token of
scientific award
as offered to general science in Australia; and let us recognize, that it is merely
through my being as an Australian the longest worker in science, that this inestimable
gift from the most renowned forum of science, fell to my share.

The Royal Society of London had awarded M one of its two Royal Medals for 1888.
With every appreciation of your disinterested participation in my joyfulness I remain
your regardfully
Ferd. von Mueller
