Hochgeehrter Herr Baron!
Als Ihr letztes v. 1/6 88, anfangs July, mir zukam war ich schon auf dem Lande — in der Nähe von Lund wohnhaft, wo ich die Sommer Monate der letzten Jahren zuzubringen gewohnt bin; und es war mir nicht möglich die von der Israeliten bay durch Miss Brooks eingesammelten Algen gleich untersuchen zu können. Nachher habe ich aber die Algen genauer mustern zu können Gelegenheit gehabt, und sende Ihnen heute eine Verzeichnis derselben. Es sind einige eigenthumlichen Formen darunter — eine ungemein dicht verzweigte

, die ich früher nie so gesehen habe — glaube aber kaum dass darunter irgend eine neue Species stecken sollte, obgleich ich früher mehrere Seltenheiten aus der Israeliten-bay gehabt habe, und besonders einige fragmenten von Sargassen, die aber zu mangelhaft waren, um genauer bestimmt zu werden.
Schon früher glaube ich Ihre Aufmerksamkeit darauf hingewendet zu haben, wie wunschenswerth es wäre vollständige Exemplare von der vorzuglich reiche Sargassen-flora Australiens zu haben. Dieselbe Art siet

ganz verschieden aus, wenn man nur die untere , oder nur die obere Pflanze vor sich hat, so auch die sterile und fertile . Seit Jahren arbeite ich darauf alle diese verschiedene Formen genauer kennen zu lernen; und ich mögte Sie gern noch einmal bitten Ihre Correspondenten zu ersuchen, sie mögten mir ganze Exemplare (unpreparirt) senden zu wollen. Ich bin gewiss ich werde dadurch viel besseres leisten können, als durch die Florideen Samlungen

die so sehr oft nur dieselben Sachen mitbringen. Es ist zu wundern wie wenig unsere ersten Algologen die Sargassen kannten!

Highly esteemed Baron!
When your last of 1 June 1888 arrived at the beginning of July I was already in the country — living in the neighbourhood of Lund, where I am accustomed to spend the summer months of recent years; and it was not possible for me to investigate the algae gathered from Israelite Bay by Miss Brooks immediately. However, afterwards I have had the opportunity to be able to scrutinize the algae more closely, and today I am sending you a list of them. There are some strange forms among them — one uncommonly thick branched
Wrangelia myriophylloides

that I have never seen previously — but hardly think that any new species should be hiding among them, although previously I have had several rarities from Israelite Bay and particularly several fragments of Sargassae, which however were too poor to be determined more exactly.
Previously I believe I have turned your attention already to how desirable it would be to have complete specimens of the especially rich Sargassae-flora of Australia. The same species looks quite different, if one just has the lower or just the upper plant before one, so also the sterile and fertile . For years I worked to get to know all these different forms more exactly; and I would like to ask you once again to ask your correspondents to be willing to send me whole specimens (unprepared). I am certain I will do much better thereby than through the collections of Florideae that so very often only bring the same things. It is surprising how little our first algologists knew of the Sargassae!
