An additional note in the register states: 'Govt Bot states views as to appt of [an] offr as Govt Entomologist & as to qualifcns of Mr French for such appt. Advises that services of Profr McAlpine be secured.' M's letter was forwarded to the Public Service Board on 18 August 1888 minuted: 'Am not aware of recomdns refd to by Govt Botanist'. French was subsequently appointed Government Entolologist, while McAlpine became Vegetable Pathologist.
