Nächste Woche, edler Freund, geht die Kiste mit Insekten an Mess Watson & Scull für Sie ab. Es ist mir gelungen, eine Leipoa ♂ erwachsen, zu erlangen, nicht aber den Thylacinus, noch den Dingo. Sind Sie überzeugt, dass die früheren Dingos Bastarde waren? Ich bezweifle es, denn der zahme Hund ist dem Dingo stets feindlich u Variätäten kommen auch bei Letzteren vor.
Die Insekten Sammlung habe ich für eine bedeutende Summe von Mr French gekauft ; es ist also eine Schenkung allein von mir. Indessen wünscht er gern für seine Belehrung ein Ex von solchen Arten zurück, von denen reichlich da ist.
Diese Rücksendung wird Ihnen wohl nicht gar zu schwer fallen, zumal da Watson & Scull solche von London aus expediren können. Es ist nicht nöthig, viele Arten nach Mr French zu nennen, da er nicht immer selbst der Sammler war, sondern viel tauschte mit den Mitgliedern des hiesigen Field Naturalists Club, deren Patron ich bin.
Wenn ich aber bitte, dass die Bearbeitung bald geschehe u so die Veröffentlichung auch, so ist es im Interesse Ihrer Entomologen, denn in Sydney bilden sich nach u nach Monographen auch für alle Klassen der Insekten heran.

Next week, noble Friend, the box with insects goes off to Messrs Watson & Scull for you. I have succeeded in obtaining a Leipoa ♂, adult,

Mound-building bird, commonly called 'Mallee fowl'.
but not the Thylacinus,

Marsupial, commonly called 'Tasmanian Tiger'.
nor the Dingo. Are you convinced that the earlier Dingos were hybrids? I doubt it, because the tame dog is always hostile to the Dingo and varieties occur even in the latter.
I have purchased the insect collection for a considerable sum from Mr French;

it is therefore a present from me alone. Nevertheless he wants very much to receive back for his instruction a specimen of such species of which there are ample there.
This return consignment will probably not fall on you too heavily at all, especially since Watson & Scull can dispatch it on from London. It is not necessary to name many species after Mr French, since he was not always the collector himself, but exchanged many with the members of the local Field Naturalists' Club, of which I am Patron .
However, if I ask that the working up happen soon and so also the publication , it is in the interests of your entomologists, because in Sydney monographers are also training themselves gradually for all classes of insects.
