In reply to your note of yesterday,
dear Mr Sewell, let me inform you, that altho' copious notes of mine are available
for the text-volume (I) of the myoporinous plants, I see no prospect of publishing
it in 1888, because the Exhibition-duties
press heavily on me in addition to the routine work; besides I have to get ready
for the Jurors, the rural Colon[ists]
and Artisans the 7th Edition (with ample new enlargements) of the "Select plants",
and to finish the "Key to the System of Native plants"
prior to approaching spring season. But I shall do all, I can, to bring out vol.

in 1889.

As well as being one of the Commissioners (International Exhibition (1880-1881: Melbourne)
(1880), p. vi) and member of several committees (pp. viii, ix, x), M acted as the
representative of Germany in the Jury for Sections XXXI and XXXII (International Exhibition
(1880-1881: Melbourne) (1882), p. 164); and provided reports on exhibits by Vilmorin-Andrieux
et Cie. (p. 39; see M to C. Newbery, 25 February 1881 (in this edition as 81-02-25a)) and Feistmantel's palaentological volumes (p. 159; see M to C. Newbery, 25 February
1881 (in this edition as 81-02-25b)); see B82.05.06 and B82.05.05 respectively.

E. Thomas to M, 22 May 1888, acknowledged receipt of this letter. However, no text volume was ever published.
Similarly, no textual volumes accompanied M's illustrations of Acacia and cognate genera (B87.13.04, 88.13.01), Australian salsolaceous plants (B89.13.04), or Candolleaceous plants (B93.02.04); however, each of these was published explicitly as an 'Iconography',
without an expectation that a letter-press volume would follow.
Regardfully
your
Ferd von Mueller.
