Melbourne 11th May 1888
Sir,
I have the honor to beg that you will do us the favor of supplying this Library with Copies of any Publications issued by your Department
from time to time; Reports, Maps, &c
I would explain that the Library has been established on a similar basis to the Railway
Libraries in England and America, for the benefit of all persons employed under the
Victorian Railways Commissioners Act and it is subsidised by the Commissioners.

On 14 May 1888, M minuted: 'Referred for favorable consideration to the hon the Chief Secretary, the
Minister of the Gov. Botanists Department'. The Chief Secretary, Alfred Deakin, approved the request on 18 May and the Goverment Printer was directed to supply
the material. He responded on 4 June, saying the materials had been forwarded on 26 May. Macartney was officially informed of the decision on 14 June. The specific works supplied have not been identified.
I have the honor to be,
