Seit langer Zeit habe ich Ihnen nicht geschrieben, lieber Herr Professor Lange, und bin auch im Rückstand mit meinen litterarischen Sendungen. Wenn die Extra-Arbeiten für die Centennial Welt Ausstellung durchgeführt sind, werde ich wohl etwas freier aufathmen.
Ich sende mit dieser Post einige Früchte von Spondylostrobus Smythii an Hr. Prof. Johnstrup, der die Coniferen paläontologisch zu studiren scheint; diese Exemplare zeigen die Veränderlichkeit dieses ausgestorbenen Baumes in seinen Früchten. Einige andere fossile Früchte lege ich hinzu, die Sie interessiren mögen.
Wenn Ihnen etwas von meinen Werken fehlt, möchte ich rathen an Dr. Bride, Bibliothekar der Melbourner Stadt-Bibliothek zu schreiben ( direct ), da seit einigen Jahren die Vertheilung der Departements Publicationen ausschliesslich durch seine Anstalt geschieht.
Hoffentlich halten Sie und Hr. Prof. Steenstrup sich tapfer unter den wissenschaftlichen Veteranen! in guter Gesundheit u. frischer Arbeitskraft.

Mit dieser Post sende ich Ihnen frische Samen derjenigen drei Eucalypten, welche am meisten Frost aushalten u. die daher in dem milden Klima Ihrer Inseln ausdauern möchten, wenn solche einige Jahre erst im Kalthaus abgehärtet und dann gegen eine Mauer im Frühling ausgepflanzt würden
Von den 3 Eucalypten erhalten Sie Samen genug, um auch an die spanischen Freunde zu vertheilen

Spondylostrobus smythii

Search for Spondylostrobus smythii in

to Professor Johnstrup, who seems to study the conifers palaeontologically; these specimens show the variability of this extinct tree in its fruit. I am enclosing some other fossil fruits that may interest you.
If you lack any of my works, I would advise writing ( direct ) to Dr Bride, Librarian of the Melbourne Public Library, since for some years the distribution of departmental publications is done exclusively through his institution.
It is to be hoped that you and Professor Steenstrup hold out bravely among the scientific veterans! in good health and fresh capacity for work.

With this mail I am sending you fresh seeds of those three eucalypts that resist frost the best and which therefore might persist in the mild climate of your island, if they were first hardened for some years in the greenhouse and then were planted out against a wall in the spring.
You will receive enough seed of the three eucalypts even to distribute to the Spanish friends.
