Neujahr 1888 .
Zuerst, theuerer Freund, lassen Sie meinen innigen Glückwunsch zum Jahres Wechsel ausgesprochen sein; möge denn die neue annuelle Spanne Zeit, in welche wir eben hinein leben, für Sie und die Ihren in jeder Beziehung freudebringend sein! So gern hätte ich die Felicitation mit einer Pflanzenzueignung begleitet; aber solche müsste auch Ihrer würdig sein! — Aber ich habe mich in den mir nur kürzlich zugemessenen Nebenstunden mich immer an der Vollendung des dichotomischen Systems der Victor. Pflanzen abzuquälen, was eine schwere und zeitraubende Arbeit ist, u. so habe ich an den Papua Pflanzen wenig arbeiten können, um auch Ihnen gerecht zu werden. Sehr bald werde ich solche wieder aufnehmen, da der "Key" nun doch fast fertig ist
Die Correspondenz erfordert etwa 3000 Briefe von meiner eignen Hand jährlich hier, — dann kommen die täglichen Gespräche mit den Colonisten, die hier in der Orangen-Zone neue Culturen zu beginnen wünschen, abgesehn von Auskunft über neue technische und chemische Industrien
Als Präsident der geogr. Gesellschaft habe ich hier auch die neuen Endeckungs Reisen in diesem Theil der Welt zu fördern oder sogar hervorzurufen, selbst die in die antarctischen Regionen. So bleiben nur Sonntage u Festtage für progressive Studien der Pflanzen, und ich entmuthige jeden Besucher, damit ich dann doch ungestört bleibe.
Aus eigner Erfahrung weiss ich nur zu wohl, was eine grosse Garten Directur meint! Aber sie hat das Gute, Sie viel in der frischen Luft zwischen den lebenden Pflanzen zu halten, was sehr zu Befestigung der Gesundheit beiträgt.
Niemanden würde ich lieber Beiträge für die dortigen Conservatorien senden als Ihnen ; aber es ist nicht Alles erlangbar, was Sie im letzten Brief aufzeichnen. Alsophila Rebeccae u A Robertsiana sind nur in den wildesten Gebirgschluchten Nordost Australiens in wenigen Plätzen vorhanden, wo kein Sammler seines Lebens sicher ist — wegen der Mordsucht der Eingebornen. Dazu kommt noch, dass die Stämme dünn wie Bohnenstangen sind, und gleich nach dem ausheben absterben, also sich nur kleine Pflanzen u dann sehr schwer (in Kisten mit Erde gepflanzt) lebend erhalten lassen, während einem Transport auf Packpferd zum nächsten Hafen[.] Frische Sporen könnte ich schon eher erlangen; würde solche Ihnen willkommen sein? Es ist freilich langweilig, auf die Entwicklung zu einer imponirenden Grösse jahrelang warten zu müssen

Arten sind erlangbar ausser C. Cairnsiana, obwohl die Verbindung mit dem Innern von Nord-Queensland (und mit der Lord Howe's Insel für dort endemische Baum-Farne) nicht leicht ist. Jedenfalls will ich thun was ich kann . Hoffentlich haben sich die letztgesandten Neuseeländischen Farnbäume als erspriesslich bewährt.
Es ist wunderbar, mit welcher Geistesfrische u welcher regen Thatkraft Sie in Ihrem venerablen Alter noch weiter zu arbeiten vermögen! Möge es noch durch viele Jahre so sein!

Jetzt nehmen mich die Vorbereitung für die hiesige Weltausstellung auch wieder additionell in Anspruch.
New Year's Day 1888.
First of all, dear friend, let me express my sincere good wishes for the New Year. May this new annual epoch we are entering bring happiness for you and yours in every way! I wanted so much to have a plant dedication to accompany these felicitations, but it would have to be worthy of you! — But in the few scantily measured leisure hours I have to agonize over the completion of the dichotomous system of the Victorian plants,

a difficult and time-consuming task, and consequently I could do little work on the Papuan plants, to do you justice. But very soon I will get back to them, as the "Key" is now almost completed.
My correspondence demands about 3000 letters annually by my own hand. Added to that come the daily discussions with colonists, who wish to commence new cultures in the orange zone,

M is probably referring to the new irrigation areas recently opened up on the Murray River, where large numbers of orange trees were being planted.
not to mention requests for information on new technical or chemical industries.
As President of the Geographic Society here it falls to me to promote new exploration journeys in this part of the world, or actually to initiate them, even in the antarctic regions. Thus only Sundays and holidays remain for progressive studies of plants, and I discourage any visitors, so that I can remain undisturbed then.
I know only too well from personal experience what the directorship of a large garden entails! But it has that advantage that you spend a lot of time in the fresh air amongst living plants, which affords much benefit for good health .
There is nobody to whom I would rather send contributions for the conservatories there than you , but not everything you listed in your last letter

Alsophila rebeccae

Search for Alsophila rebeccae in

and A. robertsiana are found only in a few localities in the wildest mountain ravines of North-East Australia, where no collector's life is safe because of the murderous natives. In addition the trunks are as thin as beanstalks and die off as soon as they are lifted. Consequently only small plants can be kept alive, and that with difficulty (planted into boxes filled with soil), while they are transported on a pack-horse to the nearest harbour. It might be easier for me to obtain fresh spores; would they be welcome? It is of course tiresome, to have to wait years before they develop to their imposing height.

Search for Macrozamia in

species are obtainable apart from C. cairnsiana, although communication with the interior of North Queensland (and with Lord Howe Island, for tree ferns endemic there) is not easy. In any case I will do what I can . I hope the New Zealand tree ferns sent last time have established themselves well.
It is wonderful, with how much mental vigour and brisk energy you are still able to continue working at your venerable age! May it continue thus for many years to come!
