I am eager, dear Dr Woolls, to bring next week at the
last
meeting of the L.S. of N.S.W. for 1887 the Acacia, allied to A. polybotrya, before
the botanic world.
Can you
timely
gain a positive answer from your friend,
how he came to raise it?

The final meeting of the Linnean Society of New South Wales for 1887 was held on 28
December. M did not describe a new species of Acacia at that meeting, nor was an Acacia
exhibited for him or for William Woolls. Instead, M exhibited it as A. baileyana,
with a description, at a meeting of the Royal Society of Victoria held on 15 December
1887 (see B88.07.03).

John Dawson, amongst whose papers M's letter is now located, who with his nephew Henry
Dawson Cocker provided the information requested. In a letter received by Woolls on
30 December (letter not found, but see Woolls to J. Dawson, 31 December 1887; Ad 46,
John Dawson papers, Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales, Sydney), M
acknowledged their help and requested further details from Cocker, which Cocker told
Dawson on 17 January 1888 he duly supplied (Ad 46, John Dawson papers, Mitchell Library,
State Library of New South Wales, Sydney). See also M to W. Woolls, 12 January 1888.
Regardfully your
Ferd. von Mueller
