Mit der deutschen Post, edler Herr, habe ich Ihnen eben ein neues Werk meines Freundes, Mr E. Curr, des hiesigen Gouvernements Heerden-Inspectors, über die australische Race zugesandt für freundliche Entgegennahme und als eine Gegengabe für die wichtigen u. zahlreichen anthropologischen Hefte, welche unter Ihrer regen Fürsorge hervorgehen. Von der grausigen Tiefe, welche die australischen Autochthonen in der menschlichen Cultur einnehmen, giebt Mr Curr glaubwürdig lebhafte u. erschütternde Darstellungen. Ich möchte inter alia hinzufügen, dass unlängst ein noch nicht dreijähriger Knabe eines Halbcivilisirten im östlichen tropischen Australien seine jüngere Schwester absichtlich tödtete, damit ihm wieder allein die ganze Aufmerksamkeit seiner Eltern zukomme; ob dieser Frevelthat lobte der Vater den schrecklichen Jungen, da er schon jetzt beweise, wie brav ein Krieger er später sein würde; — und als vor einiger Zeit ebenfalls im tropischen Australien ein Sammler von Schädeln einem Schwarzen ein ganz kleines Geschenk bot für einen craniologischen Beitrag, lockte der Bösewicht einen prächtigen civilisirten Knaben ins Dickicht, schnitt ihm den Kopf ab und brachte solchen zu dem Sammler mit einer Mien[e], als ob dies ganz gehörig wäre! Mit diesem Jahrhundert wird der Cannibalismus doch wohl selbst in Neu Guinea aufhören, und in der nächsten Generation es doch wohl durch Mission u. Civilisation keinen wirklichen Wilden mehr geben.

for kindly acceptance and as a gift in return for the important and numerous anthropological fascicles that emerge under your active care. Of the horrible depth that the Australian autochthones occupy in human culture, Mr Curr gives authentic, lively and deeply moving depictions. I would like to add, inter alia, that recently a boy not yet three years old belonging to a half-civilized man in eastern tropical Australia deliberately killed his younger sister so that the whole attention of his parents belonged to him again; I wonder if the father praised the terrible child for this outrage, because he already now proved how worthy a fighter he later would be; — and as some time ago also in tropical Australia, a collector of skulls offered a Black a quite small present for a craniological contribution, the scoundrel decoyed a splendid civilized boy into the jungle, cut off his head and brought it to the collector with a look as if this was quite proper! Cannibalism will certainly cease this century, probably even in New Guinea, and in the next generation there will be probably be no more true savages through missions and civilisation.
