12/10/87.
Last evening, dear Mr Macdonald, I received the enclosed kind letter from the Rev. Mr Lawes.
1
Presumably W. Lawes to M, 21 September 1887.
Altho' it does not contain anything new, I like to send a copy of it to the Herald this morning, if you approve of it the other papers having had already similar accounts and telegrams.
2
An article in the Herald (Melbourne), 15 October 1887, p. 2, made some of the points in Lawes's letter to M, but no mention of the information's having been supplied by M was made. Other Melbourne papers carried a range of stories, often quoting telegrams from Lawes, Cuthbertson or others to M or to the Royal Geograhical Society of Australasia. See, for example, Argus, 6 October 1887, p. 11, and Age, 3 October 1887, p. 4. There was a longer account based on an interview with Cuthbertson in the Argus from 'our correspondent' in Brisbane spread over successive iusues (Argus, 11 October 1887, p. 6 and Argus, 12 October 1887, p. 8).
Regardfully your
Ferd. von Mueller.
