Hyndman is not mentioned in the reviews of the 1887 exhibition of the Australian Artists’
Association. However, the 1888 exhibition included an architectural drawing by “Messrs
Hyndman and Bates” (Argus, 27 November 1888, p. 4). R. G. Hyndman and E. A. Bates were partners in an architectural
practice at this time; see Bates, Smart & McCutcheon records, University of Melbourne
Archives.
I feel much honored, dear Mr Hyndman, with the kind invitation to the festival of
the Australian Artists Association, and recognize this mark of attention all the more,
as I have so little claim on the Society's consideration. My health is not at all
firm, but if I feel sufficiently well then I shall attend with particular pleasure.
