26/8/87
What a splendid volume again, dear Sir James, has appeared under your powerful auspices from the N.Z. Institute.
1
Hector was editor of vol. 19, for 1886, of the Transactions and proceedings of the New Zealand Institute, published in May1887.
The multifarious and so successful efforts for original research are quite astonishing there.
Would you have the friendliness, to forward the enclosed note concerning two of the plants, figured now by Mr Buchanan to him?
2
John Buchanan (1819-1898); see M to J Buchanan, 26 August 1887, referring to Buchanan (1887), one of the articles included in the just-published volume. M evidently did not know Buchanan's address after he retired from the Colonial Museum, Wellington, in June 1885 and moved to Dunedin.
Regardfully always
your
Ferd von Mueller.
I left the letter open for you to read.
What a sudden death of poor Sir J. Haast! so unexpected, when he was returning for new work. I telegraphed my condolence to his widow.
3
Julius Haast died on 16 August 1887. M's telegram not found.
