Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Tree planting in Portland', a report of planting trees in Percy Street, Portland, Vic, by the Australian Natives Association over which the president of the local branch of the Association, R. V. Foote, presided; see Portland guardian, 29 July 1887, p. 3. Foote said before he invited the Mayor to plant the first tree that 'he had shortly before received the following telegram from Baron von Mueller.'
The report of the planting does not mention the date of the event, but a report of the meeting of the Portland Borough Council held on 26 July, in Portland guardian, 27 July 1887, p. 2, confirms the date as 27 July1887.
M's telegram was in response to a letter (not found) from Henry Day, the Secretary of the Association, who had written to inform M of the event, see Herald (Melbourne), 27 July, p. 2.
Offer felicitations at your thoughtful celebrative tree planting this day. Means might be afforded by local efforts like yours for each child throughout the colony to plant this spring yet a tree in remembrance of the Jubilee of Her Majesty's Glorious reign.
