Maistre was Acting Consul for France at this time; see Thornton-Smith (1994).
MS annotations: 'Eé no 284 le 22 Juillet 1887' [Register no. 284, 22 July 1887]; 'Repondu

[[Wrote to] the Chamber of Commerce 5-8-87].
Pray, dear Consul, convey to the Chamber of Commerce of Reunion my best thanks for
the kind offer, to send a root of the Nastus-Bamboo, of which rare species as yet,
no plant is in Australia anywhere.
I was asked some time ago, to procure for Reunion seeds of Araucarias. I have succeeded
to obtain those of A. Bidwillii and A. excelsa, and have much pleasure to forward
them to you now. I beg however to point out, that it is very difficult to obtain seeds,
fit to germinate, from the distant Araucaria-forests, so that as a rule
seedlings
are taken up from near the trees, as arisen in a wild state. I would be quite ready
to send a case with
Araucaria-plants
, should the seeds, now sent, perhaps fail.
I remain, dear Consul, regardfully your
Ferd. von Mueller
