Endlich, edler Freund, ist es mir gelungen, des Balges eines Macropus rufus habhaft zu werden, u soll solcher mit dem Ende dieses Monats von hier abgesenden P. & O. Steamer frei an Mess. Watson & Scull zur Weiterbeförderung an Sie gesandt werden, u allerlei Anderes werde ich hinzufügen. Sie sehen denn doch, dass ich Ihnen nicht ganz abtrünnig geworden bin.

Es ist aber nicht so leicht, wie früher, zoologische Gegenstände zu erwerben, namentlich Hochwild in Australien. Man gönnt den armen Thieren das wenige Gras, Kraut u Gebüsch nicht, was sie zur Nahrung bedürfen, denn die Weideländereien sind mit Heerden nun fast überall erschöpfend besetzt, und so werden die Känguruhs u auch Emus erbarmungslos vernichtet. In nicht gar langer Zeit wird manche australische Art grosserer Thiere durch Menschenhand aus der Schöpfung gestossen sein! So werden die armen Geschöpfe auch hier das Schicksal des Didus ineptus, der Dinornis-Arten, und Ihnen näher der Alca impennus theilen, von der in so rührender Weise Blasius berichtet, dass das letzte Paar in Island erschlagen sei, in dem die braven unglücklichen Geschöpfe Ihr Nest vertheidigten! Es ist zu verwundern, dass die Zoologen Dänemarks nicht zeitig schützend eintreten, damit die Brütung fortbestehe. Wir hier schützen jetzt den seinem Untergang nahen Leiervogel.

At last, noble friend, I have been successful in getting hold of a skin of Macropus rufus,

and it will be sent with the P. & O. steamer despatched from here at the end of this month free to Messrs Watson & Scull for forwarding to you and I will add all kinds of other things. You will then certainly see that I have not been quite disloyal to you.

However, it is not so easy as previously to acquire zoological objects, especially big game. The poor animals are begrudged the little grass, herbs and bushes that they need for food because the pasture lands are now almost everywhere exhaustively occupied with herds, and so the kangaroos and also emus are exterminated mercilessly. In no time at all, many Australian species of large animals will be expelled from the creation by the hand of man! So the poor creatures even here will share the fate of Didus ineptus,

of which Blasius reported in such a touching way that the last pair in Iceland was killed, in which the brave unfortunate creatures defended their nest!

Blasius (1883). The last known pair of Great Auks was killed on 3 June 1844 on the island of Eldey, off the coast of Iceland, by a landing party sent by a bird collector to obtain specimens of what was already recognised to have become a very rare species.

It is amazing that the zoologists of Denmark did not early intervene protectively, so that the hatching continued. Here we now protect the lyre bird that is nearing its extinction.
