I have the honor to submit herewith estimates of expenditure for my department during 1887/8.
I may be permitted to observe that, although no direct revenue is received through my department, yet a considerable amount is paid annually in to the consolidated revenue by the Govt. Printer for the sale of books published by me.

MS annotation in an unknown hand: 'note to Mr Luehmann 6/5'. On 12 May 1887 Luehmann sent a telegram to James Killen, accountant in the Finance department of the Chief Secretary's office: 'No Revenue in the Dept of Govt Botanist for 1887'. He sent another telegram on 19 May: 'No Pensions nor Gratuities in Govt Botanists Dept. for 1887.8 [i.e.:1887/8] as stated in letter'.

The file contains a newspaper cutting from the Argus, 14 October 1887, reporting the parliamentary discussion of the 'vote of £2,748 for the Government botanist', which was passed. M's valuable contribution to the colony was extolled and the need for 'a proper botanical museum' was endorsed.
