Sie werden sich wundern, edler Freund, dass Sie seit so langer Zeit keine Briefe von mir hatten, und dass selbst Ihr gütiges Gratulations Schreiben vom Neujahrstage bisher unbeantwortet bleib. Mit jeder Post wollte ich Ihnen meinen Dank aussprechen, und Ihnen und den Ihren auch meine besten Wünsche für ein frohes Jahr ausdrücken, und doch wollte ich nicht gern mit leeren Händen kommen.
Seit den letzten 2 Jahren ist es eigentlich […] eine Fatalität gewesen, dass man nichts zoologisch Bedeutungsvolles erwerben konnte, zum Theil erklärt sich dies dadurch, dass die nun ziemlich zahlreichen Museen Australiens das etwa Erlangbare aufkaufen; zum Theil kommt es, auch daher, weil eigentlich nicht viel gesammelt wird; denn das Reisen u ganze Leben ist hier zu theuer um solche Sammel-Expeditionen auch nur annähernd bezahlbar oder gar etwa lucrativ zu machen. Die Kosten des Sammelns in Neu Guinea und anderen neuen Plätzen sind enorm . Indessen hoffe ich doch, dass dies Jahr nicht hingehen wird, ohne dass ich etwas Ordentliches für Sie leiste.
Diesmal erhalten Sie als einen Vorläufer ein kleines Kästchen mit seltnen Coleoptiren, darunter die höchst selten u kostbare , welche Mr M'Leay nach mir nannte. Mit inniger Zuneigung und bestem Dankgefühl

remained unanswered until now. With every post I intended to express my thanks and also to express my best wishes for a happy year to you and yours, and yet I did not want to come with empty hands.
For the last two years it has really […] been a misfortune that one could acquire nothing zoologically significant. In part this is explained by the now reasonably numerous museums of Australia that buy up anything procurable; in part also because really not much is collected, as the travelling and whole life here is too expensive to make such collecting expeditions even approximately payable or at all lucrative. The costs of collecting in New Guinea and other new places are enormous . Meanwhile I do hope that this year will not pass without me doing something of value for you.
This time you will receive as a forerunner a small box with rare beetles, including the very rare and valuable one that Mr Macleay named after me.

Macleay initially named the beetle, without seeing specimens of both sexes, Lamprima muelleri: see W. Macleay (1886a), pp. 135-6 (issued 23 May 1885 (Anonymous (1929)). Soon afterwards, he reassigned it to a new genus as Phalacrognathus muelleri; see W. Macleay (1886b), read at the meeting of the Linnean Society of NSW on 30 September 1885 and issued 21 December 1885.
