The text given here is from the report of a discussion on the invitation of tenders to supply 'box timber' at the meeting of the Melbourne Harbour Trust held on 27 April 1887, Argus 28 April 1887, p. 9. The extract from the letter is introduced by 'Mr Hodgkinson said that he had recently received letters relative to box timber. … Baron von Mueller wrote as follows:—'

Common names of E. melliodora include 'yellow box', and those of E. goniocalyx, 'long leaved box' (APNI entries); a letter from Alfred Howitt to Hodgkinson, of which an extract was also read, pointed out that 'the local names given in Gippsland to trees were most unreliable'.
