11/3/87.
Rob. Watson Esqr.,
Engineer in Chief of Victorian Railways.
Dear Sir:
The branchlets with fruit of the Eucalyptus, marked C, just submitted to me, is of E. goniocalyx.
1
See R. Watson to M, 11 March 1887 (in this edition as 87-03-11a).
It passes under various names, but generally as Spotted Gum-tree. This has been pointed out in my work on the Eucalypts of Australia.
2
B79.13.11, Decade 1.
The timber of this species is durable and in many respects excellent, particularly when the tree grows in well drained sloping localities.
Of the samples A & B no branchlets are forwarded along with the pieces of wood. I should like to see such branchlets with flowerbuds and fruits, as that would much facilitate arriving at a safe conclusion as to the value of these two kinds of timber.
With regardful remembrance your
Ferd. von Mueller.
