Der Beste Rath, den ich Ihnen in Bezug auf die L.S. geben kann, lieber Herr Tepper,
ist
der
, einen Bekannten in London zu veranlassen, die Veröffentlichungen entgegen zu nehmen,
damit selbiger solche dann gleich an Sie absende. Es scheint der grossen Gesellschaft
zu viel Umstände u Kosten zu verursachen, irgend Sendungen aus London zu beförden.
Alle FLS haben — wenn nicht in London ansässig — Freunde oder Agenten, welche die
Publicationen
abholen
. Für mich thut es seit 30 Jahren regelmässig der Buchhändler, mit dem ich in London
Geschäfte mache.
Nichts
geht mir durch die Gesellschaft direct zu. Quitungen werden auch nicht gesandt. Ich
habe nie eine erhalten, auch nie eine verlangt.
Die Leute müssen ohnehin schon eine enorme Arbeit haben. Ihr Freund könnte dann auch
das Msc. u die Zeichnungen zurückfordern, u an eine solche Gesellschaft senden, als
Sie wünschen. Da aber die Lithographirung überall theuer ist, werden Sie es nicht
leicht finden, Illustrationen veröffentlicht zu bekommen.
Gewiss sind Sie überzeugt, dass ich Ihnen gern soviel Zeit widme, als mein
officieller Beruf
es erlaubt; aber der Tag hat nur 24 Stunden, u obgleich ich Sonn- u Fest- Tage stets
durcharbeiten, u fast immer bis Mitternacht am Arbeitstisch bin, komme ich doch
nie
durch
! Ich arbeitete diesmal sogar vom 31 Dec -1 Jan durch die Nacht, trotzt mehrerer Familien
Einladungen ärztlicher Freunde, einfach um die Zeit zu sparen!
Bedenken Sie auch, dass die Benennungen der Pflanzen immer sehr zeitraubend sind,
zumal wenn das Material
fruchtlos
ist. Im Pflanzen Leben sind die Charactere nicht so stabil als in der Thierwelt.
Ich habe
Ihnen
eigentlich
mehr
Zeit zugewandt als irgend einem anderen wissenschaftlichen Freunde, auch das
Wichtige
immer bald absolvirt, wie
,
,
&c. neulich wiederzeigen. Ich habe sogar durch meine aufopfernde Thätigkeit für Correspondenten
mich in
Schwierigkeiten
gebracht, indem ich der Arbeit für den "Key" nach dem schon im Oberhaus u Unterhaus
hier interpellirt wurde, zumal Zeit entzogen; u wenn ich diese
dringende Arbeit
für Victoria nicht bald beendigt, werde ich Unannehmlichkeiten haben.
Bendenken Sie auch, dass eine Liste der Känguruh Insel Pflanzen erst im Lauf der Jahre
nach manchen weiteren Reisen dort
vollendet
werden kann, ganz abgesehen von Algen. Ob also einige wenige Dicot. oder Monocotyledenen
in einer solchen Liste fehlen, kann nicht von Bedeutung sein. Sie haben auch manche
Varietät als Art betrachtet worüber ich nicht immer berichte aus gute Regel. Wenn
was Prof Tate schon enumerirt von Ihnen nun noch vervollständigt würde nach meiner
neuesten Notizen, so würden Sie
wirklich
einer
schöner
botanischer Herzählung der Arten liefern können

unter Ihre Pfl. ist, erhalten Sie
gleich
Auskunft. Denken Sie, ich habe seit vielen Monaten fast nichts thun können für die
Neu Guinea Pfl.!

The best advice that I can give you concerning the Linnean Society, dear Mr Tepper,
is
this
, to arrange for an acquaintance in London to receive the publications, so that he
then immediately sends them off to you. It seems to cause the great Society too much
trouble and expense to transport any consignments from London. All FLS
— if not living in London — have friends or agents, who
collect
the publications. For 30 years the bookseller with whom I do business in London has
done it for me regularly.
Nothing
reaches me directly through the Society. Receipts are also not sent. I have never
received one, also never wanted one.
Besides the people must already have an enormous task. Your friend could then also
ask for the manuscript and the drawings back and send to such a society as you desired.
However, since the lithographing is expensive everywhere, you will not find it easy
to get illustrations published.
Assuredly you are convinced that I gladly devote as much time to you as my
official position
permits it, but the day has only 24 hours, and although I always work through Sundays
and holidays and I am almost always at the work desk until midnight, I
never
do
get through
! This time I even worked through the night from 31 Dec.-1 Jan., despite several family
invitations of physician friends, simply to save the time!
Also consider that the naming of plants is always very time consuming, especially
when the material
lacks fruit
. In plant life the characters are not so stable as in the animal kingdom. I have
really devoted
more
time to
you
than to any other scientific friend, also always soon completed the
things of importance
, as
,
,
&c. recently show again.
I have even created
difficulties
for myself through my sacrificing activity for correspondents, taking up too much
time from the work for the "Key",
about which a question was already asked in the Upper and Lower Houses here and if
I do not finish this
urgent work
for Victoria soon, I will have troubles.
Also consider that a list of Kangaroo Island plants can be
completed
only during the course of years after several further journeys there, quite apart
from algae. Therefore whether some few dicotyledons or monocotyledons are missing
in such a list cannot be of significance. You have also regarded several varieties
as species, about which I did not always report from good principle. If what Professor
Tate already enumerated from you was just completed according to my latest notes,
you would
really
be able to provide a
splendid
botanical enumeration of the species.
As stated, if anything
out of the ordinary
is among your plants you
immediately
receive information. Think, for many months I have been able to do almost nothing
for the New Guinea plants!
