Hierbei sende ich Ihnen, geehrter Herr Hofrath, einen Auszug aus einem Briefe, den ich eben von einer jungen Dame aus Westaustralien erhielt, Miss S. Brooke. Sie wohnt mit ihren Angehörigen an der Israelite-Bai nahe dem Westende der Great Bight. Wie die meisten Damen, die an den entferntsten Stationen leben, begleitete sie oft die Brüder auf den Touren ins Innere, u. so giebt ein solcher Brief eine gute Idee von den Verhältnissen des Lebens an den Grenzen der Civilisation in diesem Welttheil, — u. mag Ihnen diese Mittheilung daher für Ihre hochwichtige Zeitschrift willkommen sein, zumal da eine kleine Skizze von dem jungen Mr Brooke beigefügt ist.

Miss Brooke hat sich als practische Amateur-Sammlerin bedeutende Verdienste um die Erkundung der Vegetation ihrer Gegend erworben.
Die öden Gegenden, welche Miss Brooke beschreibt, werden im Laufe der Zeiten mehr belebt werden, zumal wenn viele artesische Brunnen das Wasser zu Tage fördern, was jetzt mit so glücklichem Erfolg nach der amerikanischen Bohrmethode bis zu 1000 Fuss tief in Central Australien begonnen ist.
Ich weiss noch immer nicht, ob des Herrn Hofraths Anstalt die Karte der Elder-Expedition erhalten hat und den Atlas der Photographien. Unserer Geograph. Gesellschaft hier wurde Beides geschenkt, aber ich selbst — obgleich der Orginator der Elder Exped habe kein Exemplar erhalten.
Ich rieth, diese Karte u Photogramme durch das deutsche Consulat in Adelaide fordern zu lassen, da Sir Th. Elder gewiss sehr gern die Schenkung machen würde. Falls noch weitere Schwierigkeiten in dieser Sache sind, will ich versuchen solche zu entfernen.

Enclosed I am sending you, esteemed Counsellor, an extract from a letter that I just received from a young lady from Western Australia, Miss S. Brooke.

Sarah Brooks. Extract of letter not found.
She lives with her relatives on Israelite Bay near the western end of the Great Bight. Like most young ladies who live on the most distant stations, she often accompanies her brothers on tours into the interior and so such a letter gives a good idea of the conditions of life on the boundaries of civilization in this part of the world, — and this communication therefore may be welcome for your highly important journal, especially since a short sketch by the young Mr Brooke is enclosed.

Miss Brooke has done important service as a practical amateur collector for the investigation of the vegetation of her region. The desert regions that Miss Brooke describes will become more inhabited in the course of time, especially if many artesian wells bring up water, which now has begun with such success from the American method of boring up to 1000 feet deep in Central Australia.
I still do not know whether the Counsellor's institution has received the map of the Elder Expedition and the atlas of photographs. Our Geographical Society here was sent both, but I myself — although the originator of the Elder Expedition have received no copy.
I suggested to have this map and photographs forwarded through the German Consulate in Adelaide, because Sir Th. Elder would surely very willingly make the presentation. If there are still further difficulties in this matter, I shall try to remove them.
