Ich fühle mich Ihnen wieder zum tiefen Dank verpflichtet, edler Freund, für die sorgsame Untersuchung der vielen Lichenes, wobei die kleinsten Ihre Geduld auf eine besondere Probe gestellt haben werden. Da Sie nun auch noch methodisch die sämmtlichen Arten für eine Lichenologie Australiens zusammenstellen wollen, so werde ich Ihnen noch um so tiefer verpflichtet. Sofort schreibe ich nun an Mr. Bailey, der eigentlich mein Disciple in der Pflanzenkunde ist, abgesehen von seinem Gärtnerfach, um — wo möglich — Fragmente aller seiner Arten für Sie zu erlangen. In die Bestimmungen der Flechten, welche örtlich in Neuseeland geschah, hatte ich von vorn herein kein rechtes Vertrauen, da ja sehr lange Erfahrung u. ausführliche litterarische Mittel für solche Untersuchungen nöthig sind.

Ich kann es mir wohl vorstellen, dass Sie sich von den Lichenen nicht lossagen können, um die Euphorbiaceen wieder aufzunehmen; so denke ich denn selbst an die Arten Neu Guineas zu gehen.

Lassen Sie mich hoffen, dass Sie einen Triumph darin finden, dass Ihr verehrter Name in der Lichenflora der ganzen Erde für immer fortleben wird.

Again I feel deeply obliged to you, noble friend, for the careful investigation of the many lichens, in which the smallest will have put your patience to a particular test. As you now also intend to assemble methodically all the species for a lichenology of Australia,

who actually is my disciple in plant studies, apart from his trade in gardening, so as — where possible —to get fragments of all his species for you. In the determination of the lichens that occurred locally in New Zealand, I had no real confidence from the outset, since very long experience and detailed literary means are indeed necessary for such investigations.

I suppose I can imagine that you cannot renounce the lichens so as to take up the
