Shire Council on 16 February 1887, in Geelong advertiser, 17 February 1887, p. 4.

the exact name of any of the very numerous kinds of thistles which were known to exist,
it was necessary to have specimens submitted in full development. The small seedling
sent by the council had not even the leaves well developed.]
