It is with much sorrow, dear Dr Hector, that I hear of your sad accident; let me hope, that it is simply a fracture of the clavicle without complications, so that you with your robust constitution under all the care, you can have, will fully overcome this mishap.

Just while I learn of your accident, does also arrive from you Capt. Brouns new contribution to the coleopterous fauna of New Zealand; what a surprising number of endemic forms, quite new to Science!

See Broun (1887); M evidently received a proof sheet or preprint of the paper, which was read on 20 September 1886; the volume containing it was not issued until May 1887.

Further I have to thank you for your 2 new admirable annuals Report,

Annual report on the Colonial Museum and Laboratory, Wellington, NZ?

showing the remarkably prolific work of your widely ramified Department.

Though you have commenced the new annual space of our christian era with so much pain and suffering, let me hope, that the new year will prove to you and those dear to you replete with happiness!
