Melbourne,
22. Oct. 1886.
E. J. Thomas Esqr,
Secretary to the honorable the Premier.
Sir.
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of this day,
1
See E. Thomas to M, 22 October 1886 (in this edition as 86-10-22a).
and beg of you to express to the hon. Duncan Gillies my best thanks for the consideration shown me in sending me through you a copy of a letter
2
The letter from the Acting Administrator, Lagos (signature illegible) to D. Gillies, Premier of Victoria, 27 July 1886, reads: 'In the absence of Administrator Moloney who has recently returned to England for a short period and to whom your letter of the 10th March last was addressed, I have the honour to tender to you my thanks for the trouble you have been good enough to take in securing and transmitting to this Colony the parcel of seeds collected by Sir Ferdinand Von Mueller, the Government Botanist. 2. The seeds have been duly received and distributed, much, I trust, to the ultimate advantage of the Colony. 3. I shall be obliged if you will kindly cause an Expression of my thanks to be conveyed to Sir Ferdinand Von Mueller for his interest and assistance in this matter, as well as for the offer he has generously made to procure additional kinds of the seeds for trial cultures in West Africa' (P86/3110, VPRS 1163/P1, PROV).
from His Excellency the Governor of Gambia in acknowledgement of seeds of trees, supplied by special desire to the Colony of Gambia on behalf of the Victorian Government. This affords me an apt opportunity to point out to the hon. the Premier, that from experimental sendings like these arose to a large measure the very considerable annual export of seeds to other parts of the world from this colony.
I have the honor to be,
Sir, your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller.
