Diesmal, edler Freund, sende ich Ihnen ein Exemplar der Claudea Bennettiana, das grösste von dreien, die eben von Dr Edw. Ramsay gefunden sind.

Er will den neuen Fundort von Zeit zu Zeit mit dem Schlepp-Netz durchsuchen, so dass wir wohl Keramidien etc. bald erlangen werden. Nach den besseren wenn auch sterilen Exemplaren ist es ganz klar, dass diese Alge nicht congenerisch mit Claudea ist, u so möchte ich selbige meinem unvergesslichen Freunde Sonder widmen, der ja so hochverdient für die Algologie Australiens geforscht hat. Sie werden dem braven dahin geschiedenen Manne dies Denkmal gewiss mit aufbauen, u wenn Sie ihn mitehren wollen, so könnte das Genus ja unter unserer vereinten Autorität beschrieben werden. 1 Exemplar behalte ich hier; — das andere sende ich an Hr. Prof Schmitz in Greifswald, der mich besonders um Material aus dieser Algen Gruppe gebeten hat für anatomische Untersuchungen.

Es wäre gut, wenn durch Sie bald ein kleiner Aufsatz über dieses Genus erschiene, da die manchen jungen Microscopiker in Sydney jedenfalls auch diese Alge erhaschen und darüber berichten werden u so möchte die passende Dedication für Sonder verloren gehen.

, the largest of three just found by Dr Edw. Ramsay. He will search the new locality from time to time with the drag net, so that we will probably soon obtain Ceramids etc. It is quite clear from the better specimens, even if sterile, that this alga is not congeneric with Claudea, and so I would like to dedicate it to my unforgettable friend Sonder, who has indeed researched so deservedly on the algology of Australia. You will undoubtedly set up this monument to the worthy deceased man too, and if you wish to jointly honour him the genus could indeed be described under our combined authority.

The species had first been described by Harvey in 1859; Agardh created the new genus Sonderia for the species in 1890 (Agardh (1873-90), part 6, p. 117), attributing authorship of the name to M alone. Kylin made the new combination Vanvoorstia bennettiana (Harv.) in 1956, so that M's memorial to his friend Sonder is now lost.

I am keeping one specimen here; — the other I am sending to Professor Schmitz in Greifswald, who has asked me particularly for material from this algal group for anatomical investigations.

It would be good if a small paper on this genus appeared through you soon , because some young microscopists in Sydney I dare say will also catch this alga and will report on it and so the fitting dedication for Sonder might be lost.
