Baron Sir F. von Mueller K.C.M.G., M. & Ph.D., F.R.S., etc. etc.
Government Botanist
Sir,
I respectfully beg leave to present to you the enclosed certificate by Dr. Eccles,
under whose treatment I have been for that illness which rendered it necessary for
me to abstain from work.
1
Dr Eccles, M.D., wrote on 10 August 1886: 'This is to certify that a change of air
will now be very beneficial to Mr Renner he has undergone a long course of medication
which has somewhat exhausted him'. M forwarded Renner's letter and medical certificate
to the Chief Secretary; see M to A. Deakin, 12 August 1886.
From the certificate you will see that Doctor Eccles thinks it desirable that I may
have a short time for recreation if possible at an "Up-Country-Place".
Having been unable to attend to duty for a time already, I almost fear to beg too
much of the department in asking for leave of absence, but I feel obliged to send
you the certificate expressing the wish of my medical attendant as to recommend to
your kind consideration my application for leave of absence for a week to commence
when the weather may permit it.
With your kind permission I have made arrangements with one of my friends (Mr. L.
Stoesen) that he may be my substitute in the office of Custodian whilst I am absent.
I have the honor to sign myself
Baron von Mueller
your
very obedient servant,
G. Renner.
