Gerade vor dem Abgang der Post, lieber Sir Julius, erreicht uns hier die telegraphische Nachricht, dass Ihre Majestät Sie zum K.C.M.G. erhoben hat, ich eile Ihnen für diese durch Ihre langen und wichtigen Arbeiten für die Colonie Neu Seeland so hoch verdient Ehre meinen besten Glückwunsch dazubringen, und auch Lady Haast meine Felicitation auszudrücken.

Hoffend, dass Sie noch durch viele Jahre des Lebens dieses hohen Ausdruckes der Anerkennung vom Throne Brittaniens sich erfreuen werden.

Just before the departure of the post, dear Sir Julius, telegraphic information reached us here that Her Majesty has raised you to K.C.M.G.

Haast was informed of the honour on 26 June 1886 and he was invested with it by Queen Victoria on 2 August 1886; see Haast (1948), pp. 925-30.

I hasten to offer you my best congratulations for this honour so highly deserved through your long and important work for the Colony of New Zealand, and also to express my felicitation to Lady Haast.

It is to be hoped that you will enjoy this high expression of recognition of the throne of Britain for many years of life yet.
