The mail occupies me just much, dear Consul Litton,
and on Tuesday I
have to prepare
for the great meeting of the geographic Society;
then I will write
the notes for
the
first volume of the geol Soc.;
but as said before — it is impossible for me, to hold any responsible position for
that Society, my time not admitting of attending to its business, as you will see
from the delay, which arose, in even furnishing the promised brief notes. So I must
adhere to my resolution of relinquishing my position on the Council and the highly
honorable post of Vice-President.
1
Litton was appointed Consul-General for Liberia 'for Australasia and the Islands adjacent
thereto' in September 1885 (Victoria,
Government
g
azette, 4 September 1885, p. 2511).
2
M presided at a meeting of the Victorian Branch of the Geographical Society of Australasia
on the evening of Tuesday 29 June 1886, where 'Sir Henry [Governor] and Lady Loch
and suite' were in attendance (Age
(Melbourne), 30 June 1886, p. 7).
3
No such notes were ever published.
