Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Colonial telegrams', South Australian advertiser, 7 June 1886, p. 5. It is introduced by 'Baron von Mueller has received a telegram from Mr. H. O. Forbes, the New Guinea explorer,
who states that he intended leaving Cooktown for Brisbane on Saturday. Mr. Forbes
likewise states—'.
' Saturday' was 5 June, and although the introductory wording suggests that it was
sent before Friday, it is possible that the text stated 'tomorrow', and this was adjusted
in the paraphrase for publication. It is dated to Friday 4 June as the last possible
date that it could have been sent.
Forbes had agreed a few days before to wait at Cooktown while attempts were made to
raise the necessary funds, see, for example, note 3 in M to H. Forbes, 18 May 1886
(in this edition as 86-05-18b).
A translation of the report appeared in
Australische Zeitung, 9 June 1886, p. 2.
