The Royal Geographical Society of Australasia's New Guinea exploring expedition, which returned safely to Sydney on 3 December 1885 after earlier reports that the whole party had been massacred. The Victorian Branch of the Society hoped to hold a reception in the middle of January 1886 to welcome some members of the expedition in Melbourne; see M to E. Strickland, 9 December 1885 (in this edition as 85-12-09a).
