The honorable Graham Berry, M.L.A.,
Chief Secretary &c
Sir
I have the honor to submit a letter from Mr G. Renner,
an officer of the Gov. Botanists Department, who on account of deformity cannot get
his life insured, but who is otherwise in fair health. As he entered the service rather
more than a year ago, therefore prior to the new Public Service Regulations coming
into full force, I beg to submit for your favorable consideration, whether he can
be exempted from the rule, requiring Gov. officers to insure their life, especially
as he is unmarried.

See G. Renner to M, 21 September 1885 (in this edition as 85-09-21a).

M's letter was referred to the Public Service Board on 30 September and the Secretary,
H. Gomm, replied on 2 October: 'Mr Renner is not at present under the obligation to
insure his life but he cannot receive any promotion until he has effected an insurance
on his life in accordance with the provisions of Section 73 Act no. 773'. On 5 October
the Acting Under Secretary, H. Moore, forwarded this information to M, who replied
the next day: 'Mr Renner has been informed according to the above minute'.
I have the honor to be,
Sir, your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller.
