Durch die heutige Zusendung, geehrter Herr Holtze, haben Sie mich sehr erfreuet; es ist lange her, seit ich soviele für mich interessante Pflanzen von irgend einem Theil Australiens erhalten habe. Die letztgenannte, Sphenoclea, giebt für Australien nicht nur eine neue Species sondern auch ein neues genus . Es kann wohl kein Zweifel darüber sein, dass diese in Indien weit verbreitete Pflanze auch bei Ihnen einheimisch ist. —
Wie ich selbst 1855 u 1856 in Arnhem's Land und in Carpentaria war, sah ich mich stets nach der Sphenoclea um, vermuthend dass ich solche finden würde, was mir aber nicht gelang, noch hat solche sonst irgend einer meiner Correspondenten als australisch gesandt. Könnte sie vielleicht eingeschleppt sein? Die Art des Vorkommens dort sollte eine gute Idee über den Ursprung geben.
Mir sind mehrere Ihrer Pflanzen neu , u. werde ich solche demnächst veröffentlichen. Für die Samen bin ich auch recht dankvoll.

With today's transmission, dear Mr Holtze, you have made me very happy. It is a long time since I received so many to me interesting plants from any part of Australia. The last named, Sphenoclea, provides not only a new species, but also a new genus for Australia. I suppose there can be no doubt that this plant, so widely distributed in India, is also indigenous with you.

I always looked out for Sphenoclea, thinking that I would find it, but I did not succeed, neither has anyone else of my correspondents sent it as Australian. Could it perhaps be introduced? The way it occurs there should give a good idea about its origin.
Several of your plants are new to me, and I’ll publish them shortly. I’m also very grateful for the seed.
I’m writing this letter at a late hour of the night to acknowledge this consignment at once. I’ll communicate again in writing, when I’ve looked through everything thoroughly.
