Wie soll ich in Worten meinen Dank ausdrücken, edler Freund, über das so hohe Geschenk und die grosse Auszeichnung, deren damit Ihr hehrer grossmüthiger Herrscher mich würdig gefunden hat? Es ist eine so Grosse Ehrenbezeigung, dass mir fast bangt , solcher würdig gefunden zu sein. Ganz ängstlich bin ich, dass vielleicht diese graciöse Gabe officiell anlange in der Colonie; es würde für mich besser sein, wenn das kostbare Kleinod mich privat durch Sie u meinen London Agenten erreicht.

Als Ausländer im Colonial Staatsdienst ist man so vielen Ankämpfungen ausgesetzt, dass mir sogar - ich sage dies im tiefem Vertrauen - Schwierigkeiten durch diese hohe Gunst entstehen könnten, zumal da politische Reibungen jetzt walten. Gott gebe, dass die südasiatischen Fragen friedlich gelöst werden!

Hoffentlich geht es Ihnen u. den Ihren wohl. Ich selbst komme über diesen Winter besser hin, als durch den letzten, obwohl mein Bronchial-Leiden keineswegs ganz gehoben ist. Sie ehrend u. dankbar der Ihre

How, noble friend, can I express in words my gratitude for so great a gift and such a high distinction, of which your exalted and magnanimous Sovereign has found me worthy?

The Tsar had bestowed a diamond ring on M; see M to J. Traill, 15 September 1885; M to E. von Regel, 19 September 1885 (in this edition as 85-09-19a); and M to E. von Regel, 21 September 1885.

It is such a great honour, that I feel almost alarmed to have been found worthy of it. I am quite apprehensive, that this gracious gift might perhaps arrive in the Colony through official channels. It would be better for me, if the precious jewel were to reach me privately through you and my London agent.

As a foreigner in the colonial Government Service one is exposed to so much opposition, that I could even – and I say this in strictest confidence – have difficulties as a result of this great favour, especially with the current political frictions . May God grant that the South-Asiatic questions will be solved peacefully.

Tensions had arisen between Britain and Russia over Afghanistan.

I hope you and your family are well. I myself am getting through this winter better than through the last one, although my bronchial affliction has not been cured by any means.
