Letter not found. The text given here is from Bulletin
de la Société nationale d'acclimatation de France, series 4, vol. 2, p. 650 (1885) (B85.11.01). It is dated to August as the latest
likely date that it could have been written for the extract to have been read at the
meeting of 16 October 1885. This dating is supported by M’s having received in that
month the gold medal offered by the Minister of Agriculture; see the citation read at the meeting of the Society on 5 June 1885, in the notes to F. Trail to M, 18 August 1885 (in this edition as 85-08-18a). The text is introduced by 'M. le Dr Mueller, botaniste du gouvernement
à Melbourne, écrit à M. le Secrétaire des séances:' [Dr. Mueller, government botanist
at Melboure, wrote to the meetings secretary:]

The quoted passage is followed by 'M. le Dr Mueller profite de cette lettre pour renouveler
ses remerciements au sujet de la médaille qui lui a été récemment décernée par la
Société.’ [Dr. Mueller takes advantage of this letter to reiterate his thanks for the medal recently
awarded him by the Society.] A previous letter of thanks has not been found.
Allow me to send you some fresh seeds of
, one of the few large trees, of rapid growth and real value as timber, that delight
in marshy, lightly salted terrain where Eucalypti could not succeed. If these seeds
were entrusted to members of the National Acclimatisation Society living in south-western
France, where the winters are not very rigorous and where in many places there is
a damp and salty subsoil, it would be possible to provide the country with a new species
of tree furnishing construction timber and possessing sanitizing properties. The seeds
should be sown under cover, and the seedling should only be transplanted when a year old,
after the cold season. If the first tries succeeded, it would be possible to collect
a larger quantity of seeds and send it to you.
