Has done much for the promotion & study of Science in New South Wales.
Has been in charge of the Government Observatory since 1862, and Govt. Astronomer
since 1863. Organized & led the N.S.W. Expedition to Cape Sidmouth 1871. Organized and sent
out 4 parties to observe Transit of Venus 1874, and 6 parties in 1882, also 3 parties
for Transit of Mercury in 1881. Originated & presided over the first Australasian
Meteorological Conference 1879. Author of 75 Reports and Original papers upon Astronomical,
Meteorological & Physical matters, published by the NSW Govt., in the Memoirs and
Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, London, and in the Jour. Royal Society
of NSW. Designer of several improved forms of self recording Barographs, Thermographs,
pluviometers, anemometers, tide gauges, actinometers, &c. Amongst the above papers
&c (75) are "Measures of Double Stars & list of 351 new double stars" "Nebula surrounding
Eta Argus" "'Measures of coloured clusters about Kappa Crucis" "Measures of Alpha
Centauri" "The Great Southern Comet 1880" "Meteorology & climate of NSW" "Tropical
Rains" "Rain Maps" "Atmospheric lines between D lines at Sydney."
being desirous of admission into the ROYAL SOCIETY OF LONDON, we, the undersigned,
propose and recommend him as deserving that honour, and as likely to become a useful
and valuable Member. Dated this
