Strickland received the telegram in the evening of 20 May 1885; see E. Pulsford to M, 21 May 1885. It is probably the item summarized in the register of letters received by the NSW Branch of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia as 'Telegram Instructions for party' (see ML MSS 853/2, Mitchell Library, Sydney, item 554), registered as received at the Society on 21 May 1885. The register also however records two items received from M on 20 May, 'Re Expedition & instructions' (no. 209) and 'Re New Guinea Ex.' (no. 213), neither of which has been found.
SYDNEY, MAY 20 1885.
