elegantly bound as a souvenir for Dr Froude, whom to meet here I had not the pleasure, as I was ill during most of the time of his stay here.

Froude arrived in Melbourne on 21 January, staying as a guest of the Governor and visiting some country districts before travelling by rail to Sydney, where he arrived on 12 February (Age, 22 January 1885, p. 5; Ballarat star, 29 January 1885, p.3; Sydney morning herald, 13 February 1885, p. 6; 14 February 1885, p. 13)
I did not like the distinguished visitor to leave our shores without a mark of attention from me. Thinking that you would be sure to meet the great Historian, I sent the presentation copy to your adress, but hearing neither from you nor Dr Froude, I am afraid it got miscarried.
