The year date is an estimate. Other letters from Johnson are dated between October 1882 and 14 November 1883. The reference to in the present letter suggests that it was written after the one of 17 October 1883; Johnson's botany also seems more sophisticated than in earlier letters in the sequence. Since it is unlikely that Johnson would have written on successive days in November 1883 without referring to the fact, it seems that the present letter was not written on 13 November 1883 and dates from a later year. The ink is of a different colour from that in all the other letters. While 1884 becomes the earliest possible year, MEL records show that Johnson continued to send specimens to M until at least 1892.
