Am 2 Febr. vorigen Jahres, geehrten Herr Landsmann, schrieben Sie mir einen sehr freundlichen Brief, den ich am 13 März 1883 beantwortete. Seitdem hörte
ich nicht wieder von Ihnen; u vielleicht haben Sie San Francisco wieder verlassen.
Was mich besonders antreibt, Ihnen jetzt zu schreiben, ist der Wunsch, Sie auf das
Erscheinen einer neuen u erweiterten Ausgabe meiner "select plants for industrial
culture" aufmerksam zu machen, da selbiges Ihnen dort leicht zugänglich sein wird.
Es erscheint Ende dieses Jahres im Verlag von Mr G. Davis zu Detroit, Michigan. Ich
selbst habe gar keinen geldlichen Vortheil von dieser oder irgend einer anderen Ausgabe
dieses Werkes. In demselben werden Sie noch weitere Auskunft finden über die besten
Eucalyptus-Arten für Texas, wegen welcher Sie Nachfrage hielten. Samen sind dort bei
Colonel Warren in der "Farmer's Office" erlangbar. Können Sie mir gütig irgend welche
sichere Auskunft verschaffen, welche
-Arten die meisten Bretter, das beste Bauholz,gute Masten u.s.w. in Mexico liefern? auch welche
-Arten das dauerhafteste Holz liefern, die beste Gerberrinde u.s.w.
Ich möchte solche Notizen gern für die nächste australische Ausgabe der "select plants"
verwerthen. Vielleicht ist Mexico gut in der New Orleans Ausstellung vertreten, u
auf diese Weise die gewünschte Auskunft im Druck zu erlangen. Vielleicht aber sind
Ihnen in Mexico selbst manche Data bekannt geworden, die ich dankbar unter Ihrem geehrten
Namen in die neue Ausgabe aufnehmen würde. Sie ehrend u Ihnen alles Gute wünschend

On 2 February of last year, respected fellow countryman, you wrote me a very friendly
letter
that I answered on 13 March 1883.
Since then I have heard nothing more from you and perhaps you have left San Francisco
again. What particularly prompts me to write to you now is the desire to draw your
attention to the publishing of a new and enlarged edition of my Select plants for industrial culture,
because it will be easily accessible to you there. It will appear at the end of this
year in the publishing house of Mr G. Davis at Detroit, Michigan. I have no monetary
benefit at all myself from this or other editions of this work. In it you will find
even further information about the best Eucalyptus species for Texas, regarding which you have made enquiries. Seeds are available there
from Colonel Warren in the "Farmer's Office".
Could you kindly supply me with any certain information, which
species produce the most planks, the best timber, good masts and so on in Mexico?
Also which
species produce the most durable timber, the best tanning bark and so on. I would
like to utilize such notes very much for the next Australian edition of the Select plants. Perhaps Mexico is well represented in the New Orleans exhibition and in this way
the desired information is to be obtained in print. But perhaps much data are known
to you in Mexico itself, which I could gratefully incorporate in the new edition under
your respected name
