The heading has been cut from a formal recommendation form and glued to the top of the letter. The document is dated to September 1884 as the latest it could have been sent to be read at the meeting of 6 November, the first meeting of the new session. The previous session ended with a meeting on 19 June 1884, and another nomination by M read at the November meeting was sent earlier; see M to the Linnean Society of London, 21 May 1884 (in this edition as 84-05-21a).
