15 Aug. 1884.
The honorable the Chief Secretary.
Sir.
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 13. Aug,
No 2807, accompanied by Circulars, and shall not fail to act in accordance with the
instructions conveyed; but I would beg leave to point out, that the provision made
for return-sendings obtained for literary exchanges made from here, becoming directly
available to Departments requiring such, applies particularly to a professional Department
like mine, where the return-sending need
frequent
and
immediate
access in the course of connected studies in
progressive
science.

Letter not found.
As however the return sendings may in some instances be of interest to the public
library as well, I would beg to suggest, that the trustees of that institution might
ask for a duplicate return-sending, one copy for the public Library, the other for the Gov. Botanists-office, whenever publications are sent out as issued from my Department.
I may add, that the Gov. Printer, according to a standing order, supplied the trustees
with 25 copies of any publications of my office, issued by the Governments press.

Additional comments and arguments were made in M to T. Wilson, 6 September 1884.
I have the honor to be,
Sir, your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller.
