Nach längerer Zeit ist nun endlich wieder etwas für Ihr Museum fertig geworden, edler Freund; so dass die Sendung im Lauf der nächsten Woche mit dem dann abgehenden Dampfschiff versandt werden kann. Die Sendung sollte etwa Ende September in London sein u. Mitte October (also noch vor dem Winter) bei Ihnen eintreffen. Ich bin noch brustkrank, doch etwas besser, u. hoffe von einer Tour in die warme Wüstengegend am Murray-Flusse im Frühling mit Gottes gnädigem Wille noch Genesung.
Was ich diesmal sende sind:
1. Holzgeräthschaften, welche vielleicht nur theilweise für Ihr bot. Museum sich eignen werden. Was Sie nicht gebrauchen können, möchte irgend einem Gewerbe-Museum dort willkommen sein; denn es ist vorauszusehen, dass schon nach wenigen Jahren Eucalyptus-Holz im Grossen für Geräthschaften verarbeitet werden wird am Mittelmeer, wo Euc. Waldungen alle anderen Gehölze in den Rückstand bringen werden, da solches Holz viel schneller gezogen werden kann als irgend eine andere Sorte Hartholz.
2. eine Sammlung australischer Käfer, 300 Arten umfassend, grossentheils benannt , was Ihnen angenehm sein wird. Da aber von einer bedeutenden Zahl keine Namen gegeben oder hier bekannt sind, so werden sich wahrscheinlich manches Neue darunter finden. Ich möchte daher rathen, die Sammlung bald von einem speciellen Entomologen dort durcharbeiten zu lassen, u. dann bitten, dass eine oder die andere Art nach Mr. Ch. French genannt werde, der diese Sammlung zusammen brachte, u. von dem ich selbige kaufte , freilich zu ziemlich bedeutendem Preisse. Hoffentlich wird die Sammlung das unvermeidliche Schütteln auf der Reise ertragen. Ferner sind 150 Lepidoptira gesandt, die auch Neues enthalten mögen u. noch etwa 100 andere Insecten. Dann sind eine Anzahl Vertebraten in Alcohol gesandt, auch ein paar Bälge, einige Crustaceen, unter den letzteren einige von Neu-Guinea.
Hoffend, dass es Ihnen in jeder Beziehung recht wohl ergehe, bin ich ganz der Ihre

Nächstens erhalten Sie auch eine Menge Conchilien, aber nicht diesmal.
Im letzten Moment habe ich noch die benannten Eier 50 austr. Vogelarten hinzufügen können.

Now at last after a very long time something is ready again for your museum, noble friend; so that the consignment can be sent in the course of the next week with the steamer departing then. The consignment should be in London about the end of September and arrive at your place in the middle of October (thus still before the winter). I am still affected in the chest, but somewhat better and with God's gracious will I hope still to recover by a tour in the warm desert region on the Murray River in spring.

M went to NW Victoria for the last two weeks of September; see M to T. Wilson, 15 September 1884, and M to G. Berry, 28 September 1884.
What I send this time are:
1. Wooden implements, which perhaps are only partly suitable for your botanical museum. What you are not able to use, may be welcome to some kind of trade museum, because it is assumed that already after a few years Eucalyptus wood will be processed on a large scale for tools on the Mediterranean, where eucalypt forests will leave all other timbers in their wake because such wood can be grown much more quickly than any other kind of hardwood.
2. a collection of Australian beetles, comprising 300 species, for the most part named , which will be agreeable to you. But since no names are given or are known here for a considerable number, many a new thing will probably be found among them. I would like therefore to advise to have the collection worked through by a specialist entomologist there soon , and then ask that one or other species be named after Mr Ch. French,

who brought this collection together and from whom I purchased it, admittedly at a rather considerable price. Hopefully the collection will withstand the unavoidable shaking of the voyage. Then 150 Lepidoptera are sent that also may contain something new and another 100 insects. Furthermore a number of vertebrates are sent in alcohol, also a couple of skins, some crustaceans, among the latter some from New Guinea.
